'T WELZYN VAN WYK 5'

Large ceremonial goblet with the words 'T WELZYN VAN WYK 5' (To the good fortune of district nr. 5).  This is the area in Amsterdam right between the Kloveniersburgwal and the Damrak near the Nieuwmarkt and De Oude Kerk (The Old Church). In the 18th century Amsterdam was devided in 60 districts. Every district had it's own 'Schutterij", a group of well off men that functioned like a local police force, but also acted as the fire brigade. This glass was used to toast to this district by those men.

Leadglass, engraved in The Netherlands.

Mid 18th century.

Height: 20,3 cm 

Sold to the Koninklijk Oudheidkundig Genootschap, with aid of the Vereniging Rembrandt, to be exhibited at the Amsterdam Museum.
